A Three Day Break in October
Surprise! We had a three day break and took advantage of the time to camp, visit and do more family research.
Our car headed to Kenyon, MN on Thursday to look for remnants of the B J Borlaug family. BJ was married to two sisters, Synneva and Britha Lowe, who were sisters of my great-grandmother, Gertrude Lowe Baker. We found Synneva's grave in the church yard of Holden Church. BJ was the postmaster at the crossroads called Norway about a mile from the church. Later he moved to Kenyon and opened a bank. We found our information at the Kenyon Library. Then we spent a couple hours at the Historical Society in Red Wing.
That evening we set up our TENT at Lake City. It was cold outside but we had brought an electric heater which kept the inside of the tent at about 60 F. We had a pleasant night.
Friday brought us to Baldwin, WI to visit Beth, who had Bean family information. Larry's great-grandmother was Emily BEAN Wilson/Sheffer. Beth shared her old family photos and the information she knew of her grandparents, who were descendents of Emily's brother, Thomas Bean. She also told of her life growing up in Black Duck, MN during the Depression. What a fun visit!
In the afternoon, we traveled the interstate to Beloit, WI. It rained off and on all afternoon. The campground was closed and it was cold and rainy so we opted for a motel. We had a chance to catch up on life with Jerry & Joan, Larry’s cousins. They reminded us that the Art Tour was happening just west of Madison.
We stopped at four places on the tour and enjoyed a great demonstration of glass blowing and a photographer in Spring Green. Larry was able to ask a master canoe builder questions on building a wooden boat. He wants to rebuild the old family boat from Eagle Lake. The tour took us through beautiful rural farmland. The day started out very foggy, but cleared by mid morning.

Beautiful October Colors
This past week has been beautiful here in MN. The colors are changing dramatically each day. The weather has become mild. We've had some rain off and on which we need desperately to replentish what has not been here this summer. We have been busy at home as well as with our various activities. MOPS (Mothers of Pre Schoolers) started last week. We enjoy working with young children. We square danced two nights in a row besides the club lessons on Monday night. Elevan of us earned a banner on Friday night. (You need eight to get a banner.)
On Saturday, we drove to Princeton to see Matthew play for the championship game. They won first place. The other team really played well also. It was a joy to be outside watching Matthew and all the other parents and grandparents. Then we drove to St. Cloud for a retirement party for one of our square dance friends. To end the day, we drove to Paynesville to dance again.
Today (Sunday) we are back home busy with our own things again. Larry has been varnishing. I prepared next week's Sunday school lesson and am writing on the blog.
